Why Good Students Still Lose Marks in A-Level Physics
Why understanding a topic in lessons and demonstrating it accurately in a timed exam are different skills.
Understanding and exam performance are different skills
Following an explanation in a lesson is different from reproducing that understanding accurately, in mark-scheme-appropriate language and under time pressure. Many students have developed the first skill more than the second.
Marks follow specific evidence
An answer can be broadly correct but miss marks when it lacks the required term, comparison or reasoning for the command word. This is a skill that can be taught and practised directly.
Timed work reveals hidden gaps
Unlimited-time confidence can disappear under real paper conditions. Once the pattern is defined, such as command words, significant figures or long-answer timing, the fix becomes targeted rather than more of the same revision.
